In 1895 we made a business assignment, and the shock...

In 1895 we made a business assignment, and the shock was very great at the time. For five years after I did nothing but take medicine of all kinds, and finally I went to a physician, who said that I ought to be treated by hypnotism. I told him that it was evil, and I did not want it practised on me; nevertheless it was done. I was given a preparation of strychnine, arsenic, and quinine, and through this and the hypnotic treatment I was a mental and physical wreck in a month. This occurred in Indiana, and I then came home to my parents in Rock Island. I kept getting worse; had four different physicians, and finally underwent an operation, the physician stating that it would cure the mental trouble; but when the healing from the operation was completed, I was still more shattered physically. My case became more of a mystery to the physicians, but the final diagnosis made it an unusual form of bowel trouble, induced by mental conditions, and I was told that such a case was hardly ever known to be cured. I was in a sanitarium three months; was helped, but not by any means healed, and after leaving there commenced to go backwards again. I did not know where to turn, but just then a Sentinel was handed me, and from the time I read it I realized that there is only one physician,—God. With the help I have received, I am now anything but a physical and mental wreck, as I seemed to be at the time I found Christian Science. I had gone down to seventy pounds in weight; at the present time I weigh one hundred and thirty. Not one drop of medicine has been taken, nor any desire for it expressed through me, since I have taken up the study of this wonderful truth, which does set us free if we only wait patiently and know that God governs.
