Ten years have elapsed since I became interested in...
Ten years have elapsed since I became interested in Christian Science. It was the healing of aching feet that caused me to investigate its teaching. I had suffered for a year or more, and was about to give up my position, as I was obliged to stand most of the time, which added greatly to my suffering. After trying everything of which I had been told, in a material way, and finding no abatement of the pain, a kind neighbor prevailed upon me to try Christian Science, and with two weeks' treatment I was healed. I immediately began reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and attending the services. I thought I would progress more rapidly if I were out of the store where I worked, as it seemed to me that every customer who had an ache or a pain stopped at my counter, and I would have to hear of it. It was not long, however, before I learned that this was my work, and that I could help others as well as myself by being patient and by knowing the truth at all times.
As for myself, I have proven Christian Science to be preventive as well as curative in many cases. I have not lost even a half day from the store during these years on account of sickness. I have been able, with the understanding I have of this truth, to overcome colds, sore throat, headache, the grip, and many other annoyances that are apt to befall one. I once caught my finger in closing a case and crushed it severely. I had a customer at the time, and my first thought was that I would have to call some one to wait on her, but I simply took out my handkerchief and wound it around the finger, and began declaring the truth. It was but minute or two until the pain was destroyed. I really forgot about it the rest of the day, and the next morning my heart overflowed with gratitude when I found that I could use my hand as at any other time. I experienced no inconvenience whatever, and the nail did not come off. These demonstrations may seem small, but when I see these same annoyances happen to others, and know how they are disturbed, I am thanful that I have a better way.
I need to be watchful continually. My department is near the main entrance, and in winter it is the coldest place in the store. Fear is expressed by many, who say, "Why I would get my death of cold if I had to put up with this." Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." In these cases I always know the truth, and simply answer, "I have no fear of catching cold." Being the only Christian Scientist in a large department store, I am often criticised, and have heard unkind things said about my religion, but I am learning day by day to overcome all such with love, and I am realizing more fully the meaning of a verse of Scripture, "Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them."
