We were spending a few weeks in the country and it...

We were spending a few weeks in the country and it seemed as if our pleasure would be marred in various ways, but each time the discord was quickly overcome by the truth. We had been there but a short time when my nine-year-old boy complained that his head ached and that he felt sick at his stomach. This suggested a return of one of the bilious attacks which used to last for several days, but which had not appeared since we first learned of Christian Science. I opened our text-book and read to him, and in a short time the ailment was entirely destroyed. A few days later a toe was very badly bruised. It was much swollen, and the child said he had passed a sleepless night on account of it. I told him that the same truth which healed the headache could be applied in this case. He went about his play as usual and nothing more was heard of the sore toe. Just before we returned home he came in contact with so-called poison ivy. At first there were only small blisters on his feet and limbs. I told him that God made all that is and pronounced it good; that the animals could walk through the ivy without receiving the least harm; that the ivy did not know whether it had come in contact with a boy or an animal; that it was only a false belief which made any one seem to suffer from it, and that God is the only power.

I had to leave him for a few days, and upon my return a rather sorry and alarming sight met my eyes. The small blisters had become large sores extending above the knees, a few had spread to his hands and face, and he was unable to wear his shoes and stockings. In a very apologetic manner he said, "Mother, I tried to do the work, but one night it seemed so real that I cried. I have overcome the pain now, but I know it looks badly." We went to work to destroy the ailment at once. I told him that we must learn to look upon error as unreal. We worked together, knowing the truth as we had done before, and although it was longer before all traces had disappeared. in three days it had abated so that he was able to wear his shoes without discomfort and to attend school. I then read to him the words of our Leader, which say, in substance, that disease once conquered through the truth can never return. (Science and Health, p. 217.) I told him that he never again need fear this so-called poison, but that it was never wise or necessary for us to wilfully handle those things which mortal sense calls harmful.

These demonstrations were very helpful to me and to the child, and I cannot express in words my deep gratitude for this blessed truth,—MRS. M. H. GUTHRIE, Hartford, Conn.
