The New Tongue

WHEN we begin to learn the way in Christian Science a change takes place in the manner in which we express ourselves, and with study and growth our vocabulary undergoes a radical change. Words which formerly were in daily use are discarded entirely, because our mental growth has rendered them useless to us. If we are true Christian Scientists we no longer talk about feeling sick, tired, afraid, or discouraged; do not say we have overeaten or taken cold; do not emphasize the selfishness or weakness in those about us. At first we do this simply because we are told that if we wish to be free from these ills we must not dwell upon them; but gradually the thoughts, or more correctly, the false beliefs for which such words stand, are eliminated from consciousness. We no longer look upon them as realities of being, and hear them spoken of only to deny their verity. One by one these words slip out of use, until a long list of words and phrases are swept out of our daily conversation; and with this dropping off of the old comes a great sense of freedom. We have lost nothing, and in the place of these outworn words come those which tell the truth about God and man and the world about us. Enlarged thought finds new symbols. We learn to think and speak of God as divine Love, Truth, Life, as substance and intelligence; and of man as God's idea, expressing health, wholeness, completeness, and harmony. These and many other like expressions form an integral part of our speech, are the very essence of it.

We know that our word becomes a law unto us. Jesus said, "By thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." One who has learned even a little of the language of Spirit has but to enter a household where the old forms of expression are the accustomed ones, to realize the great freedom he enjoys in the new sense. Our own watchfulness, faithfulness, and discretion in using the language of Truth will help toward the fulfilment of our prayers and the promise in Science and Health, "The night of materiality is far spent, and with the dawn Truth will waken men spiritually to hear and speak the new tongue"
