Though gratitude is best shown by earnest effort to reflect...

Though gratitude is best shown by earnest effort to reflect in our lives the blessings we have so richly received, yet I would express some slight part in words also. I did not recognize the truth when first it came to my notice, and it was not until I became conscious that relatives and friends were being helped, in cases where physicians had failed, that I began to think seriously about it. Then I read parts of our text-book, Science and Health, and would have put it aside, but that the evidences of its practice forbade. To be honest with myself, I must understand, if possible, what wrought such results. Continued study brought little light, until a practitioner said, in response to my plaint of not understanding, "If there is one statement that you do understand — use it — and others will become clear." I tried this method and found its truth continually proved. Light began to dawn, and it still comes in proportion as I make use of that already received.

The purifying presence of Spirit has freed me from many annoying illnesses, such as frequent headaches, sore throat, bilious attacks, and chronic catarrh. For such relief I am deeply grateful, but this physical healing does not mean as much to me as the changed condition of thought which follows even glimpses of Truth. From childhood to womanhood I had been oppressed with myriad nameless fears, — fears of being alone, fears of darkness filled with horrors, fears of impending disaster, etc. These were known to be senseless, but they caused more acute agony than any physical pain. Through the consciousness of Love as ever-present, they have all been dispelled. The removal of over-sensitiveness has also greatly benefited my life. The suffering and injustice which seemed to be in the world clouded my horizon and often made personal pleasure seem a positive sin, but the knowledge that God, good, creates all that really exists, and that perfect wisdom governs, opens vistas of hope for the time when all shall know God, when "the recognition of life harmonious — as Life eternally is — can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not" (Science and Health, p. 495). I know that this recognition will destroy cruelty, greed, injustice, selfishness, race differences, ignorance, and poverty.

For all the blessings that Christian Science is bringing to a heart-hungry world I am indeed thankful, and gratitude fills my heart for the unswerving, consecrated work of our beloved Leader, whose great gift to us is the knowledge of a near and loving God, available in our daily need.
