After many years of shifting, doubt, and indifference, in...
After many years of shifting, doubt, and indifference, in matters of religion, I have, during the past thirteen years, had abundant reason to value the teachings of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which has given me an understanding of truth, and its spiritual, moral, and physical healing power has been demonstrated to me. Christian Science has also given me a spiritual understanding of the Scriptures. I commenced reading Science and Health at the solicitation of my wife, who had become an earnest student of it, and the reading of the text-book in connection with the Bible soon convinced me that it was based upon Scriptures, — upon the life, teaching, and work of Christ Jesus, — and I needed no other incentive to continue the study. Prior to this I had ceased entirely to be interested in Bible narratives; mainly for lack of the light which Science and Health has since shed over its pages. This light has increased with the development of my understanding of Truth, while now the Bible and Science and Health are inseparably connected in my study.
While I did not take up Christian Science because of sickness, I may say that later on a long absence from home was necessary, and while so situated, a severe physical ailment developed, which my efforts at self-treatment failed to reach effectively. I finally asked my wife for help, and my case was placed in the hands of a practitioner. This brought relief quickly, and a cure. This experience with absent treatment was what I needed to prove to me that Christian Science methods are scientific. At an age when most men decline in business activity, I have been and am now very active, and the troubles which have appeared, some of them severe, have been overcome by Truth, hence I know that Christian Science is a living and livable religion, applicable to daily experiences and requirements. In following the teachings of our loved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, one learns that God is ever-present and is an all-powerful help in every time of need.—George W. Cushing, Chicago, III.
