Christian Science came to me in a time of sorrow, when...
Christian Science came to me in a time of sorrow. when every conscious thought was a prayer for help. When Science and Health was placed in my hands, its wonderful spiritual import brought the dawn of a new life to me. My first impulse was to share this great treasure with those who were working with me in the Master's vineyard, for I was sure they too would rejoice in following the star of hope which was just rising for me. but I was warned against taking up the further study of Christian Science and told that it was the work of Satan. Though sorely grieved, I still hoped that the Christian Science literature would speak the words of Truth better than I had done, but when that too was refused, I knew that I must press on alone for a time. I studied diligently and gained enough understanding to enable me to stand firm when a seriousillness seemed not to yield after several months' treatment by a loyal Christian Scientist, but this passage from bondage into freedom was not without its reward, and I have since come to be thankful that the healing was slow, as the truth learned during those months of trial has changed my life. By the constant declaration of the truth, unsuspected opposition in the home was uncovered and rendered powerless, and the demonstration of perfect healing was made almost immediately. Later, by the instantaneous healing of neuralgia after all material means had proved unavailing, this opposition was overcome and the way opened for the introduction of Christian Science to this fireside.
When our little church was organized I had the privilege of becoming one of its members, and also of uniting with The Mother Church. I have seen our church attendance grow from less than a dozen to nearly one hundred. including those who have been lifted up from almost every form of disease and sin. Prejudice and ignorance of what Christian Science is have given place to tolerance and understanding, and bigotry and hatred yield to charity and brotherly love.
While I am more grateful than words can express, for the many instances of physical healing, yet the joy and peace which have come into my life through our revered Leader's wonderful writings are much more to me. My daily prayer is that I may be accounted worthy to follow her as she follows Christ.
