[Written for the Sentinel.]

The Mountain Path

I found a path upon the mountain-side,
Winding and long;
I found a path upon the mountain-side,
And, with a song,
Began my journeying. I prayed to see
Only the verdant, sunny peak ahead of me.

Trusting the rugged mountain path, my slow
And painful steps I did not count, and lo!
Father, o'er jagged rocks,
I reached the sun-crowned height,
And saw Thy glory in the wondrous light
Of Truth.

Safe on the heights, mine eyes now longed to see
The toilsome path my feet had climbed to Thee;
But, looking far, it seemed a glorious way,
Love-hallowed in the light of falling day;
Each jagged rock below appeared to be
A guide-post, pointing to Eternity.
