"The effect of righteousness"

Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; ... until the spirit be poured upon us from on high.

Does any one question what must be the "effect of righteousness"? If so, he will find the answer given by the prophet Isaiah in the telling words, "quietness and assurance for ever." On this point the prophet is most definite. He outlines in panorama the desolations of mortal experience, comparing them to a land overgrown with thorns and briers that invade even the palaces and the "houses of joy,"—a condition which shall remain for many days and years, "until the spirit be poured upon us from on high," when the scene is changed and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, righteousness is established, and the people dwell in a "peaceable habitation, and in sure dwelings, and in quiet resting places."
