Before I heard of Christian Science I was treated for...
Before I heard of Christian Science I was treated for three years by one of the best oculists in New York State for astigmatism and a complication of diseases of the eyes. He gave me very little hope, and said I had only one chance of not becoming totally blind. My fear was dreadful; I thought surely I would be blind, as some of my ancestors had been. During the first year I sat most of the time in a darkened room, with a heavy bandage over my eyes. At the end of three years I had improved so that I could read with the use of glasses. I had four paris to be used for different things, and the doctor warned me never to go without them. After wearing them for eight years, I heard of Christian Science. I was interested, and purchased a copy of Science and Health. I read it through once, when one morning I forgot to put on my glasses. I did not miss them for about three hours, and after this I soon left them off entirely, but my fear was so great I did not dare to lay aside the glasses I used for reading or sewing. Soon after this I received class instruction. I commenced to work to overcome the remaining trouble, and one morning, after I had worked for some time without my glasses, all of a sudden I could see the words distinctly. Oh, the joy and gratitude I felt; how I praised God; and I was thankful also to Mrs. Eddy, through whom this glorious truth had been revealed.
In one week I had read "Rudimental Divine Science" through without glasses, and I have not had any use for them since. The Bible and Science and Health have ever since been my daily companions, and each day I ask that divine Love will lead and guide me in the way God would have me.—Helen E. F. Wagner, Fort Plains, N. Y.
Six years ago I went to a Christian Science practitioner for treatment. I had not been free from some kind of pain for such a long time that I felt completely discouraged and ready to be helped. My parents had both been druggists, but I was glad to drop medicine for a better way. I took two weeks' treatment, at the end of which time I felt much improved, and I had caught a glimpse of what Christian Science meant. I began studying Science and Health for myself, and almost without knowing when, all the aches and pains disappeared, and I found myself without what the doctors had called chronic throat trouble and catarrh. I was also healed of indigestion, sick-headaches, a backache, and cough which never left me for two years after having pneumonia. I had not been without a sore throat for several years, and had taken treatment for this trouble from a throat specialist for over a year without any signs of getting better. The treatment was more painful and disagreeable than the disease itself.
