I wish to express my gratitude to God, and to our Leader...

I wish to express my gratitude to God, and to our Leader for Christian Science. Gratitude is also due for benefits received from the Sentinel and Journal. My attention was drawn to Christian Science nearly fifteen years ago, through the healing of a life-long friend of my parents of a chronic disease of many years' standing. A young lady friend and myself then determined to try it. I had been told by one of the most prominent doctors here, that I had not six months to live if I persisted in remaining in this section of the country. My special trouble was so far advanced that it did not occur to me to try Christian Science for it, but I was also subject to terrible headaches and thought it could be trusted to cure me in my next attack. However, my friend was to make the first trial. She was taken with a severe sore throat and we called on a practitioner. Finding her away, my friend called in a doctor a few hours after, and he pronounced it a case of grip. She rapidly grew worse, the illness developing into pneumonia.

After an anxious night with her, for she was staying at my home, I asked my father's views as to the advisability of trying Christian Science. It was then very new here, but he thought it would do no harm to try it a few hours. I accordingly called a practitioner. At this time the patient had been delirious for forty-eight hours at least, could not retain even a spoonful of water, and rejected medicine entirely. About half an hour after the arrival of the Christian Scientist she became rational, asked for a glass of water, and drank all of it. I was surprised to see this followed by no ill results. A few minutes later she called for food. I gave her an egg in milk and she seemed almost convalescent in manner. I asked the Scientist what food I should give her, and she replied, "Just what you have at table, if she likes it." This was about nine in the morning, and at noon she had a hearty dinner.

Upon witnessing this demonstration I determined to eat whatever I liked, and if I became sick from it, have Christian Science. I was sure even then that it could successfully care for all ills. I had been nearly starved, having no desire for food most of the time and taking medicine all the time. That day saw my last dose of medicine. I began a few days later to take treatment. My healing was slow, but I never lost courage nor doubted. The truth as revealed by Christian Science has ever since then been my guide and Comforter, helping me through many dark hours. It is indeed the light that never faileth.
