I was taught in early childhood that God had seen fit...
I was taught in early childhood that God had seen fit to remove my father by death, and thus a strong tie to the far-away city was formed. I studied the Bible as the guide-book thither. I sorrowfully doubted my ability to reach it, and in order to be of some use in the world, and to practise self-denial, I chose the training of a medical nurse, and applied all my energies to make a conscientious and proficient one. The duties of this profession caused me to break most of the health laws; consequently, in a few years, my not very strong constitution was broken down. and materia medica failed to build me up, although I was faithful in using all the remedies prescribed. This made me miserable in mind and body, and the next thing in order was a change to a lower altitude. Circumstances placed me in the vicinity of a religious institute in Chicago, where I availed myself, when able, of the free lectures given there by eminent divines. I took up the study of the Bible with renewed interest, being impressed with the verse from Psalms, "Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases." Slowly but surely this led me to lose faith in materia medica, and I decided to use only simple home remedies and dieting, meanwhile bearing my ups and downs as patiently as I could. Gladly I returned to Colorado, only to be again disappointed. Finally, after bearing this ill health for eight years. I saw one whom I had known to be seriously afflicted, healed by Christian Science. I laid aside my prejudices and made some inquiries. On being told that it was the same truth that Jesus and his disciples practised. I thought it too good to be true, but I decided to investigate. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy was loaned me, and I began to give all my spare time to the study of the Bible and the Lesson-Sermons. I made quick work of everything else, which previously had dragged heavily. As I read, peace came and my ills fled away; namely, insomnia, organic stomach and bowel trouble, which commenced as a functional disorder, pain in back, and kidney trouble; also sick-headaches,, which had increased in violence until they were the dread of my life. Thus I had the proof which shows that divine Truth heals all our diseases. I was convinced that a belief in material remedies, no matter how simple, shuts out from us the true sense of God, who is able to perform all He has promised, even to the binding up of all our wounds. For this wonderful revelation of Truth we can but love our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who points suffering humanity to the Christ.—Emma Webb, Denver, Col.
