Two days before last Thanksgiving, when I was preparing...
Two days before last Thanksgiving, when I was preparing for our family gathering, I had what was to me a wonderful demonstration of Truth's power. A crate had been left in the hatchway of the cellar, and I thought best to bring it in. About two o'clock I stepped into the hatchway, which was quite dark, and as I was holding the crate in front of me I caught my foot and fell with terrific force over the crate to the cement bottom of the cellar, badly bruising one knee and bending the foot back, almost under me. I was so shaken that it seemed to me every bone in my body was broken and the muscles in my foot all torn loose. I cried out in pain, but my mother, who was the only person in the house at the time, did not hear me. I gathered myself together, and vehemently denied the thought that I was injured, and after a little was able to crawl up the steps and sit down. Over and over I declared the power of Truth, and my sense of suffering was overcome so far that I was able to get upstairs. When my daughter returned from school the pain in my ankle had become so great that I was obliged to remove my shoe, and soon the foot became greatly swollen and too sensitive to be stirred.
Owing to the fact that there was so much depending upon me, when preparing for Thanksgiving, my fear was great, and I sent for a pair of crutches, but the effort to walk, even with them, caused me torture.
Upon retiring for the night the weight of the bed clothing upon my foot seemed more than I could bear. All this time I was feeling almost certain that I could not overcome this trouble without help, and there was no practitioner nearer than twenty-five miles. Suddenly the words, "O ye of little faith!" flashed over me, and at once I cast aside every fear and declared the allness of God, and that nothing could harm me, as we are taught to do text-book (Science and Health, p. 397, line 10), and in a short time I fell asleep and slept sweetly. In the morning I dressed myself, and after a little found that it did not hurt my foot to move about, and I realized the blessed truth that it was well, for I could walk with perfect ease.
