Scientific Healing
Persons who are experiencing for the first time the wonderful spiritual uplifting which follows even a slight insight into the realities of being as revealed by Christian Science, are apt to confound revelation with demonstration, and to believe, because they have been shown a part of the answer, that they have worked out the whole problem. In consequence of this self-deception, a period of exaltation is often succeeded by a time of depression, when the clouds of materiality seem thicker and more impenetrable, if such a thing were possible, than they were before Christian Science brought them a glimmering of light.
At such times, those who have not yet learned something of the stubbornness of personal sense—also the difference between apprehending the Science of being as a theory and actually knowing it as a fact—are likely to add unnecessarily to their burden of discouragement by unwarranted self-condemnation, or worse still, in a spirit of self-righteousness, they may blame Christian Science because it has not instantly brought them full exemption from false belief.
A recent experience, while traveling, brought home forcibly to me the obstinacy of personal sense, and also showed me the difference between intellectually comprehending a condition as a theory, and positively knowing it so thoroughly and so soundly that understanding could not be shaken by any arguments of material sense. Furthermore, the experience has given me a clearer idea of what Christian Science treatment really is—that it is not a strange, mysterious, or occult process by which natural law is obviated, but a simple, logical, and eminently sane mental procedure by means of which intelligence, armed with truth, asserts and proves its dominion over error.
