The Healing Power of Christian Science

Marion (Ind.) News-Tribune

Christian Scientists do indeed claim that their system of healing is "a rediscovery of the healing power employed by Christ Jesus," and their claim is ably substantiated by thousands upon thousands of authentic cases of healing without the use of drugs or mesmerism, but as Jesus healed, through divine power. If the Church, throughout the intervening centuries of the past, had continued to practise Christian healing through the understanding of Jesus' teachings, as was done for three centuries after Christ (see Gibbon's Rome), there would have been no need of a "rediscovery."

After thirty-five years of study and research since her wonderful discovery, she declares "herself still a willing disciple at the heavenly gate, waiting for the Mind of Christ" (Science and Health, Pref., p. 9). This statement carries with it a deep significance for thinking people.

Mrs. Eddy does not claim this Science to be new, nor that it originated with herself, any more than did Newton claim the law of gravitation to have originated with himself, or Copernicus that he originated the stellar system. These men simply discovered facts which had existed since "the morning stars sang together," but which were unknown to human consciousness. Yet doubtless there were those in their day presumptuous enough to declare, "Why, that is nothing new." And in this connection may we ask our readers: "If the truth taught in Christian Science was taught in the philosophies of Berkeley and others, why did not the same results accrue from the study of these philosophies as from the study of Christian Science? Why did not the study of these philosophies result in physical and moral healing?
