Spiritual Sense our Need
The world is in extreme need of the truth which is taught in Christian Science. The belief in materiality, and dependence upon it as a source of blessing and comfort, or a true basis of evidence, has long since been recognized as unreliable, transient, and deceptive. The false testimony of the material senses, with the doubts and fears which accompany them, hinders mortals from seeing the supremacy of spiritual thought (their true God-given selfhood) and leads them into the by-ways of sin, suffering, doubt, and despair,—for which there is no remedy in materiality, the carnal mind.
When Peter recognized the Master coming toward the tempest-tossed ship on the sea, his true selfhood, or spiritual consciousness, was awakened, and this enabled him to walk on the water and to give ample evidence that it is right for men to expect, and possible for them to obey the injunction, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." After Peter had walked a portion of the way toward the Master he began to sink. Why? The water was no deeper or less buoyant, and Peter was no heavier than when he began to walk. What was the explanation? This: he had taken into his thought the material conditions and "he was afraid." The Master then aided him in his incomplete demonstration, but said, "Wherefore didst thou doubt?" showing that it was the acceptance of the sense testimony which was the sole occasion of Peter's failure. The Israelites' submission to false material thought brought corresponding discomfort to their bodies as well as stagnation to their progress,—out of bondage into freedom, out of sense into Soul.
From the early dawn of the Christian era the Bible has taught the necessity for the transformation of the body by the "renewing of the Mind." But this has not been comprehended, taught, or practised by mortals until the truth of Christian Science was set forth by Mrs. Eddy, who has herself proven, and taught thousands of others to prove, that health, peace, joy, and security which may be realized through the recognition of the allness, the omnipresence of Truth, the awaking to that spiritual selfhood which is the kingdom of God within.
