The terms of ransom asked by Rasouli and his band of bandits who kidnapped the American citizen Perdicaris and his stepson Varley in Morocco are considered by the State Department as impossible of acceptance. The United States cruiser Olympia, flying the flag of Rear Admiral Jewel, in command of the European squadron, and the United States cruisers Baltimore and Cleveland are now at Tangier. The United States has requested the cooperation of France in securing the release of the captured men. This action is very favorably received in France as being the first distinct international recognition of the paramount influence of France in Morocco.
Porto Riean teachers to the number of six hundred may visit the United States during the summer. Of this number four hundred will go to Harvard and two hundred to Cornell. These teachers have appropriated one month of their salary toward meeting the expenses of the trip. The balance, it is hoped, will be raised by subscription in the United States. Army transports will convey them from the island.
The United States cruiser Tacoma, which sailed from Honolulu on May 20, has arrived at San Francisco. The ship made a detour toward Panama in order to locate if possible an unknown island on which the warship Levant is thought by some mariners to have been wrecked in 1860. No uncharted island was seen and the soundings made failed to indicate anything of importance to navigators.
