Mrs. Eddy teaches that for a man to be free is to be "guided rightly, and governed by his Maker, divine Truth and Love" (Science and Health, p. 106). All the mental work of true Christian Scientists is of necessity in this line and leaves one always free from any personal control and more under the guidance of the law and power of God, who always acts upon each individual directly, and not through the medium of another's personality. The office of a Christian Science practitioner is, as it were, that of a messenger to tell another of that which the other has not yet known; namely, of the infinite presence, power, and love of God governing all. It is as if one should bring to a man in the dense shade of a forest a message of the bright sunshine awaiting him outside. The Christian Scientist appeals from an unjust law, which would make him subject to evil in its myriad forms, to the law of God, which is a higher law and which sets him free,—it is an appeal, so to speak, from the lower court, wherein evil usually prevails over good, to the higher court, where good always prevails over evil. As the Apostle Paul said, "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."
