It is now some few years since "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...

It is now some few years since "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy was placed in the hands of a member of our family, who was known by all our friends as a confirmed invalid, with the suggestion that at least it could do no harm. The book was read indifferently at first, then with increasing interest and power, and finally the quiet, silent, and effectual work of Truth was made manifest, by the invalid's restoration to health so that she could do things which she had not done for twenty-five years.

This silent, impersonal, and Christ-like work appealed to me as the greatest evidence of "Emmanuel, God with us." I had ever seen, and led me to look further into the subject myself. The reading and study of the text-book was soon followed by class instruction, and it was with a feeling of deep gratitude and the consciousness of having found "the pearl of great price," that I worked in the Master's vineyard and proved for myself and others "the power of the Word" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 398), when spoken with authority.

Those who have not been consciously healed of what the world terms incurable disease, may often be tempted, perhaps, to think that their testimony is not worth writing, and yet I know that a habit overcome, a higher standard of life reached, a conscious breaking of the thousand and one laws of false material sense through the power of Truth, is no less a proof of God's power to heal than is the destruction of a cancer. For several years when testifying to what Christian Science has been to me and what is has done for others, I frequently prefaced my remarks with the statement that "I did not come to Christian Science for the physical healing," and I know now that was said with a degree of pride which one day called for destruction, for we learn in Christian Science that every phase of mortal belief, physical, mental, and moral, must be met and overcome.

Last winter as a result of not sufficiently guarding myself against the effects of "a growing sense of the odiousness of sin, and by the unveiling of sin" (Science and Health, p. 366) in one's own consciousness, one of the dread beliefs of mortal mind, acute, and accompanied with intense suffering, manifested itself. Its usual course covers several weeks, and the mortal law which follows says that one does not entirely recover from its effects for several months. Within a week the condition was entirely broken, and within three weeks I was out driving in a sharp winter wind.

It has been said "false appear to Christian Scientists in order to disappear," and perhaps one never feels more grateful for the silence and eloquence of Christian Science than when disease has been proven an illusion and powerless to claim you as a victim. "The healing of the seamless dress," I have learned is ever "by our beds of pain," and one realizes that the undivided garment of righteousness — right thinking — is only worn as we meet and destroy, through the power of the Christ-truth, every false belief of the flesh. This truth enables one to bring forth the "beauty of holiness," the fruits of the Spirit, and to prove that "the kingdom of God is within you." "Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance." A deeper sense of gratitude to God, to our beloved Leader, and to all her faithful and loyal followers, who by every least proof of "the power of the Word" have helped me to do better work, and enabled me to point the way to others, fills my thought with joy unspeakable.

Lillie Olin Burckett, Brooklyn, N. Y.

It is about three and half years since I first learned of Christian Science. Six months prior to that time an experience had entered my life which caused me to lose confidence in both God and man as I then understood them, and each day there was a moral wrestle not to end the hopeless outlook my future on this earth presented. I was awakened from this lethargy by the cure through Christian Science treatment of a chronic disease from which my mother had suffered for twenty-five years, and gradually I learned that God is Love and God is All. Where heretofore I had seen nothing but darkness I learned to know that there is always the beacon light of Love and Truth before our understanding. Where heretofore there had seemed to be nothing sure except unhappiness and death, I learned to know that there is no reality in unhappiness and that God is Life eternal. Although I did not espouse Christian Science on account of any personal physical healing until its light had begun to brighten my path, I had suffered from an annual cold which came each fall, and which invariably settled on my chest, filling many weeks of each winter with suffering. I also suffered from chronic catarrh of the stomach. The stomach trouble entirely ceased about two and a half years ago and the annual cold failed to appear since my understanding of God's love and power, through Christian Science.

My nephew, a growing boy of fifteen years, sprained the ligaments of his ankle while skating. The local doctor after keeping his foot in a cast for some time told us that be would have to wear iron braces and heavy calfskin shoes until he grew to be twenty-one years old at least, an opinion in which a specialist agreed, and for nearly a year the boy did so, being compelled to forego all manner of sports which would require the use of his feet. When my mother was cured by Christian Science my sister felt impelled to rely upon the same power for her son. After two weeks of treatment the iron braces and heavy shoes were dispensed with, and since that time, now about three years, my nephew has been perfectly free from the law which materia medica had imposed upon him.

Christian Science in a source of daily strength and wisdom for me, I am very glad and very grateful that it has entered into my life.— Alice Morgan, Westfield, N. J.
