I did not turn to Christian Science because of physical...
I did not turn to Christian Science because of physical healing, but as the result of observing in the daily lives of some of my childhood friends, how it was possible to live so near to God that fear and doubt could have little part in one's experience.
Eighteen years ago an only brother lay at death's door, as the result of an accident, and we dared not trust him to the care of Christian Science when it was suggested to us, but rather did all that we thought could be done in the regular way, only to see our dear one pass from us. I could but be impressed at that time with the unfailing love and kindness expressed at that time with the unfailing love and kindness expressed in the comforting words of assurance from those who had stepped out from our loved orthodox church for this strange, new teaching, wherein it was affirmed that there is in reality no pain, no death, no sorrow. I will say that our friends in the old church did all that human love and kindness could do to lighten our burden, while believing in the reality of what we were passing through.
However, on comparing results, I could but liken their kindly efforts to the sympathy of Job's three friends who "made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him," while the words of compassion born of the scientific interpretation of our Master's teaching according to Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, brought true comfort which resulted in the willingness to empty our bottles of the old wine, that we might be supplied with the new.—that of Spirit.
At this time a copy of our text-book, Science and Health was placed in our home. It healed the wound of sorrowing father and mother, and we feel sure saved the mother from mental darkness. For the past seventeen years, with the Bible, it has been our daily study. During this time Christian Science has been our only remedy, and at times the demand upon Love has been very great.
At one time, as the result of a runaway, my father was brought into the house seemingly beyond human aid. Through the help of Christian Science he was in a few hours restored and the next day took a twenty-mile drive with the same horse. An old friend, a physician, told us that he had lost a patient who was injured in exactly the same way, in less than an hour after the accident occurred.
About four years ago while visiting at my home, my father was ill and seemed at death's door for weeks. We did not name the disease but its manifestation was a breaking out into angry sores of the lower limbs, from the foot to the knee. It did not at first seem to yield to Science treatment, but rather kept getting worse until it reached nearly to the bone, although the pain was in a measure mastered.
The only thing done in a material way was bathing and bandaging for cleanliness. Just as the sores were healed an abscess formed, and the cavity from which the discharge came was the size of a finger, and nearly that depth. Here again the family was brought face to face with the "last enemy," but in what a different state of thought. No question then as to trusting the loved one with God. The entire family felt that nothing human could save him, some firmly believed and the others earnestly hoped that Christian Science would prove the victory of Truth.
The prayers were answered, and one month from the time of what appeared to be the crisis, our father was enroute for his home, a journey of a day and night.
While visiting the family last summer on my return from our communion service at the Mother Church, I saw him quickly recover from an attack of cholera morbus, and today though having passed the "three score years and ten," he takes an active part in daily transactions, and I trust is quite awake to the necessity of proving that Science is not only curative but is preventive as well.
After sixteen years of experience in the study of Christian Science I can truly say that God has been good to us in giving to the world Christian Science at this age through our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.
