It was not for the actual healing of physical ills that I...

It was not for the actual healing of physical ills that I was first brought to Science; it was rather the power claimed for Christian Science to heal on the Scientific basis of the allness of God and the nothingness of evil, discord, and inharmony that roused my curiosity to know how God had been thus, so to speak, rediscovered amid the mass of dogma and superstition attaching to His holy name. At my wife's instance, I read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy. I did not quite understand it at first, because I was so unaccustomed to take anything written on ecclesiastical subjects, literally, or to realize that words of hope and comfort could apply to my present state of being. My delight and wonderment,—"Why, it is literally true that God is Love, and never created discord or inharmony; they are as unreal as the mirage or as counterfeit coin!"—may be imagined.

I was verging on my fifty-ninth year when I took class instruction. Besides my share of minor ailments from time to time, I had had one serious infliction from almost infancy; viz., tendency to inflammation of the cornea of the left eye, from, I think, my fifth year until some four years ago. After my twenty-first year the attacks became acute, often confining me to a dark room for some weeks. This was followed by convalescence with a pad over the eye for some three or four weeks more. At last, so frequent did the attacks become that, by advice of a celebrated oculist, the cornea was cauterized with a red hot wire. After that, though the effects of the attacks were greatly mitigated, their frequency was not affected to any great extent. I had two in three years. It was after the last attack that I came to Christian Science, and for four years I have been quite free. I used to be bothered by acute attacks of lumbago, which absolutely crippled me for days at a time and caused great suffering on the slightest movement; also by attacks of indigestion in form of heartburn which seemed to follow partaking of certain kinds of food and which necessitated liberal doses of carbonate of soda. I did not treat myself specifically for any of the above ailments, but since taking up the study of Christian Science they have quite gone. The unlabored working of the divine Mind has been the cause of my freedom. My gratitude to our devoted Leader cannot find expression in words, for not only have my physical ills been dissipated, but claims of moral discord and inharmony have also been proved null and void.
