Perhaps no religious movement of later years has enjoyed the substantial progress and loyalty of its adherents to the extent that Christian Science has, and in spite of the obstacles placed in its path by those who have wilfully or ignorantly misunderstood its purpose, it has gathered strength with each year and now presents a growth in numbers which arouses the interest of all. It must be conceded that to attain his growth there must be something very satisfying and wholesome in its teaching. Mere theory would long ago have uncovered its own emptiness, and those who had been attracted by its promises would have deserted it for some more alluring object. But not so with Christian Science; its development has been permanent and attended at all times with an unusual amount of prosperity.
The secret of the success which Christian Science has achieved lies in the fact that wherever understood and practised it has enabled its adherents not only to heal disease, but to maintain a standard of health far ahead of that experienced before the adoption of this belief.
The reformation which inevitably accompanies the study and application of Christian Science is of even more importance than the physical healing. In casting about, therefore, to find a reason why Christian Science should have received such wide acceptation, it is found that it has prevailed because it is effectually filling a human need.
