While crossing the Atlantic some months ago, I had an experience with sea-sickness, which I will relate. The second day out, while passing through the English Channel, the sea became rough. I saw many of my fellow-voyagers succumb to sea-sickness, but as I had never suffered much from the malady myself I gave it no particular thought. However, on the afternoon of the day referred to I became sick and was obliged to go to my stateroom. Thus began a severe struggle which lasted four hours. I was most miserably sick. The thought came to me if this agony should continue through the rest of the voyage, I never could endure it, and if there had been another Christian Scientist aboard, I certainly would have appealed for help, but as I was alone I knew I had the work to do myself.
I did work as best I could, denying that this universal belief in sea-sickness had any intelligence to govern me, and affirming that I had God-given authority to annul the action of this false, so-called law. In this way I resisted the evil mentally, while the testimony of the senses was that I was so ill I could scarcely raise my head, but at last God's word proved efficacious, and at the end of four hours I felt I was healed. My courage and strength returned, the feeling of nausea was gone, and I was able to stand on my feet. I was still a little weak, but I went to the upper deck, and there I enjoyed a promenade around the deserted decks. The waves had not in the least subsided and the boat was pitching and rolling as much as ever, but my belief in the law that this motion upsets the stomach was thoroughly destroyed, and I was free. I shall never forget the feeling of joy and gratitude I experienced for the relief from that suffering. The pleasure of the rest of the voyage was enhanced by this experience. It was to me a most positive proof of the efficacy of Christian Science treatment. I was glad that I had gone through the suffering, for thus was I enabled to see the glory of God made manifest.—M. P., Oak Park, Ill.
