Speaking for Others

In our desire to emphasize our remarks we are sometimes tempted to state that Christian Scientists as a class do this or that, forgetting that except on well-known points it is presumption to speak for others. The feeling that we are privileged to do this may arise from the thought that where all are working from the same basis they must reach the same conclusion. But it should be remembered that while Christian Science is always the same, our application of its truths varies according to the degree of individual understanding and individual demonstration. With our problems at such different stages of solution, our conclusions as to application must necessarily be in a state of growth, as we advance in the understanding of Science. These conclusions may therefore differ, and yet each be true from the standpoint of the individual. How necessary then to avoid making generalized statements of attitudes towards a given phase of the life problem, when really we have only our own experiences from which to judge. It may not be necessary to point out that such statements are prolific sources of misunderstandings which injure the cause.
