On May 23 I experienced a grand demonstration of the power of Truth. I am a railroad switchman by occupation, and while engaged at my work I was caught by the engine foot board which ran upon my leg and threw me to the ground, and at the same time passed over my foot doubling it up in a space of about four inches, causing the foot to bend at the instep. My foot was pressed solidly against a tie, so that I could not move. The engine was stopped and the two switchmen who were assisting me with the work were standing on this foot board at the time of the accident. One of them said, "Let's lay Jim's leg over of the other one. His leg is broken." This man did not know my understanding of God, did not know that I was a Christian Scientist, but the other man did, though neither of them was a Scientist. My reply was, "Do not touch me, I am all right. I am a Christian Scientist." So I lay there about a minute realizing that God is an everpresent help, and that He always looks well after His own. When I got up I went on about my work as if nothing had happened. I became somewhat lame later in the evening so I had help a friend near by, who, with his good wife, is a Christian Scientist. Next morning I put my shoe on and went work, and had no lameness, no soreness. This friend saw the accident at a half block's distance, and came to me just as I was getting up. He said not a word to me nor I to him, but thank God the thought he was holding for me and my own realization that no evil should befall me, made the demonstration.
I am indeed very thankful to Mrs. Eddy for showing us how we can go to God and get these good gifts.
We have no church here; we are only a very small society, though we meet every Sunday and Wednesday and go over the helpful lessons, and the testimonial meetings are held at my house. I do not forget to thank God for even the small understanding I have, but I pray for more, and I know that my prayer will be answered. God will bless Mrs. Eddy and her true followers.
