The Atonement
Pittsburg (Pa.) Despatch
The atonement of our Lord may properly be called vicarious, since it was a pure sacrifice for mankind manifesting, his infinite love. He said that he could have called more than twelve legions of angels, intimating that he could have prevented his death if he had used the power at his command.
His death and resurrection illustrated the ideal manhood, proving that it was deathless, that his life was not in matter, that he could not be confined within the tomb, realizing, as he did, that God was his life. Jesus proved the truth of his teaching, "It is the spirit that quickeneth [giveth life] ; the flesh [matter] profiteth nothing."
His death and resurrection were needed to illustrate certain facts concerning the Science of being which were necessary to be understood and practised by mortals in the fulfilment of the Scriptural command, "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling."
