To those who have never suffered from the fear of storms and atmospheric conditions, it may seem strange that any one could be under such bondage as I seemed to be in my early experience prior to my acquaintance with Christian Science. It seemed to be almost an innate, inborn sense with me that there was something in the rain, or snow, or wind from the east, that would take away my health, and as a result health did take wings.

A few years after becoming interested in Christian Science, I was called upon to minister to those who were quite a little way from the city, and I was in the habit of going once or twice a week for several years through all kinds of weather, intense heat, cold, rains, and snows of the severest character. I very well recall the sense that came to me the first time that I found myself riding through a severe sleet storm, with the wind directly in my face, when I realized my freedom from the fear that had possessed me the years before. I had hardly realized that I was learning that perfect love casteth out fear, but I certainly was mastering that lesson. In those journeys, the words of the hymn that we sing so often as Scientists, frequently came to me and helped to overcome the old thoughts of fear. It is a little hymn that is very familiar to many of us, and it frequently came to comfort me through those journeys:—
