A Convincing Experience
When I was a child I was taught that God is the loving and ever-present Spirit and I believed Him to be especially fond of good children. As I grew older reason seemed to demand that I should think of God as the unknowable. In January, 1894, I purchased Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. When I first read this book I was conceited over my supposed intelligence. However, I soon noticed that when I did not allow the book to anger me it would produce a quieting mental result, and so I read on, I was in a most inharmonious frame of mind, which I knew neither drug, knife, nor change of climate could relieve.
During the night of March 19, 1894, all my doubts as to the power of Christian Science were forever laid aside. It seemed to me that I recognized that the Christian Science God and the hovering Spirit of my childhood faith were identical. I felt His presence and power and I was glad. I heard the regular breathing of the sleeping doctor and of the drowsy nurse and I knew that the power of man was nothing to rely upon. The arm of the Lord was revealed to me. During the quiet hours I repeated over and over many times some of the truths I had gleaned from Science and Health, and in the early morning I shouted to the doctor to wake up for unto me Truth had been revealed. Braving his displeasure I told him I had learned that there was a power in Christian Science, and I said to my dismayed husband that I greatly desired to study. Since that night, eight years ago, I have taken no medicine and I have never again cared for a human physician. Very often error has seemed presents and God absent, and I have had failures and made mistakes, but instead of being adrift I have an infallible compass and guide in Christian Science. After such a joyful revelation it would be folly for me to doubt that there is a power in Christian Science.
