Children's Comprehension of Christian Science

Recently while on duty in the reading room, I was asked by a young man, what book would give him the most information about Christian Science. I gave him Science and Health, telling him that This and the Bible are our text-books. After reading a while he closed the book, and thinking a knowledge of some of the results of an understanding of Christian science would be of benefit to him, I gave him the Journal opened at "Testimonies from the Field." In a few minutes he looked up, and in a surprised tone said, "Have you read this? It is a testimonial from a child. Are children able to do this work?" I reminded him of Jesus' words, "Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein." I assured him that the pure mind of childhood is better able to grasp the Truth than the adult mind which is burdened and fettered by so much of error.

After he left the room my thought reverted to the many demonstrations the Sabbath School children have made, a few of which I will relate, as they may prove an assistance to other children. A boy about eleven while playing ball was hit on the head by "a swift one" as he called it. His first thought was one of anger, and throwing down the bat, he was about to refuse to play longer. The next moment he realized that it would be impossible to demonstrate away this physical pain with a mind filled with anger, and picking up the bat, he pleasantly told the boy who had hit him that he was all right and ready to go on with the game, and thereafter he felt no inconvenience from the blow.

A boy of nine was driving in the country with his parents when a thunder-storm arose. The mother, who always had an intense fear of lightning, became greatly alarmed. Turning to her, the child said, "Mamma, you can't telephone to Mr.—now, (naming a practitioner) and you know you are God's child and nothing can hurt you." So clear was the child's realization of the protecting power of infinite Love, that the mother's fear instantly vanished.
