The New Old Bible
The Bible student to whom the Scriptures have been opened by its Key, Science and Health, finds sacred history to be not a collection of biographical abstractions, not a compilation of mere personal experience. He finds more than this, that national development is the counterpart of individual regenerative growth.
The incidents from ·Adam to Jesus are fraught with deepest significance and are replete with wisest personal instruction. Each man travels in his own growth every step of the way from Egypt to Canaan. Indeed, the sense journey begins in the Garden of Eden with the seeming fall into materiality, and cannot end short of transfiguration into spirituality. On the way the Red Sea has to be crossed through faith in God, during which human sence can see only the surging billows of sure destuction. the manna is furnished to-day to the faithful followers of Truth, just as of old. The walls of Jericho must still be brought down through faith and unity. The same grumbling consciousness that questioned Moses' wisdom as a leader is grumbling and questioning still, and must still be rebuked and silenced. Again and again it is necessary to go back and handle the serpent which has been thrown down and fled from in fear, to go back and prove that all attainments in good beliefs, in business, in art, in law, and in letters when handled with the understanding of Christian Science, can and will become a rod upon which to lean while presenting to humanity this new revelation of the Truth that saves.
To the awakened student the Old Testament ceases to be an incredible, half-mythical history and becomes a constant teacher and counsellor in every-day living, a series of object-lessons which teach unquestioning obedience, unhesitant sacrifice, and unbounded faith in the one infinite Good.
