Before I began reading Science and Health I was in great...
Before I began reading Science and Health I was in great spiritual darkness and utter despair. Everything I put my hand to, in a business way, was a failure, but as I read and followed up the Bible references the light began to break. I saw myself as never before, and realized that I was not an accident, but that there was a cause for my existence, and that God was ever-present.
The spiritual light which came to me through reading our text-book was interspersed with many dark seasons and attacks of despondency. I never was desperately wicked or utterly depraved, but I have fully realized what Science and Health says, that "sin is the image of the beast, to be effaced by the sweat of agony," in that my shortcomings have clung to me with the greatest tenacity.
From my boyhood I have been very sensitive and have always harbored a spirit of revenge, never forgetting an injury, brooding over a small wrong till I would burn with hatred. While reading Science and Health I realized that this evil disposition was passing away, and to-day I am certainly a better man and a better husband.
