Stephen's Experience

THE "Lesson from the Life of Stephen" in the Sentinel of November 21 is so beautiful and practical, and one so much needed, that the desire to express gratitude for it will doubtless arise in many hearts.

The discouragements that come from long delayed demonstrations over obstinate claims, have turned many from the path that would have led to unspeakable blessings had there been only the desire to rise above the physical and to rejoice in that eternal harmony which alone is real.

Truly the lesson from Stephen's experience is a glorious one. In the hands of his enemies, to mortal sense surrounded by all the power of the "one evil," amid the clamors of the false witnesses against him, suborned to accuse and convict him, "all that sat in the council, looking steadfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel." The rage was at its height, but he was not only calm but radiant, reflecting in such full measure the joy which found so full expression in him, that it awed his persecutors into silence. The high priest's questioning proved the power that the vision of the light reflected from that face had upon the enemy.
