Despatches from New York give the following account of the way Christmas was observed in that city:—
In the churches thousands of voices were lifted in prayer and hymn. The day was announced from high belfry and from brightly lighted altars. Wealthy and poor joined in the evidences of good will. They who had been blessed with an abundance of this world's goods spread the tables for their less fortunate fellow-men.
One of the features of the day was the dinner to nearly twenty-five thousand persons given by the Salvation Army. Frank Tilford entertained the newsboys, and the Evening Telegram distributed to its young agents free copies of the paper. Senator Sullivan gave a dinner in honor of his numerous constituents.
