How can I Know I am Right?
When I first began the study of Christian Science, I thought I could stand up and face the whole world in my new-found convictions, I felt so happy and "lifted up;" but after more study, and the arguments of opposing friends, a great many doubts and fears arose, and I asked myself again and again, How do I knew that Christian Science is right? I had never witnessed any wonderful demonstrations, and what I had seen I thought "might have gotten well any way;" so I was one of the doubting Thomases. I tried to think I was right, and yet I sometimes doubted. Then this thought came to my mind, "By their fruits yeshall know them." What are the fruits of Christian Science in me? I know that since trying to live it I have a very much clearer sense of the Bible. I begin to love my enemies. I have more charity for my neighbors who sometimes say unlovely things about me or my friends, for I now know that we are all children of the one Mind, even the Father of all, and that some day the mantle of wickedness shall fall from all his children, and we shall all see each other in the image and likeness of Love. Now I have no fear for the morrow, and when storms rage (as they often do in this western country) I feel perfectly safe. If at times I have a little pain or suffering, I do not fear that "it may develop into something more serious." I do not waste on it a second thought, for I know that God's power is infinite, and He will take care of me if I trust Him. It is such a comfort to have something to lean on that we know cannot fail us if we do our part. I have only mentioned some of the fruits. What do you think of them? Are they good or are they bad?
Ah! to look back at the old life of fear, taking bad tasting medicine, etc., is like looking back into a dark cave from which you have just emerged into the bright sunlight. So I feel that I can know that I am right when I love my fellow-man and try to reflect God more.
