Catarrh and Consumption Healed
On the 12th day of October, 1886, after a life of sixty years in error and doubt, my physician, after a consultation with another doctor, said, "Mr. E., you may as well fix up your affairs, as I can do nothing for you. Medicine cannot save you; you may live a month or two, possibly not more than ten days."
I had been troubled with catarrh over twenty-six years, and now had consumption with hemorrhages; also sciatic rheumatism fifteen years, and all the ills it seemed that afflict mortal man. All of this after a life of years and years of belief in, and devotion to, doctors and drugs. That same day a friend called and said, "Mr. E., you do not seem so well to-day." When I related what my physician. had said during the forenoon my friend replied, "You had better try Christian Science," telling what it had done in her case, after years of treatment by the best doctors in Denver, Col.
My first word of reply was, "Is Christian Science another phase of Spiritualism and fraud?" After much talk pro and con, at my friend's suggestion, I called a healer. When I said to the healer, "I do not understand how you have the power or ability to heal me without a material remedy," he replied, "Oh, I cannot do it; God heals, I voice the Truth and God does the work." I said, "I do not believe in the God I was in early years taught to believe in." The reply was, "In Christian Science God is Immortal Mind, fills all space, and leaves no room for the belief of sin, sickness, and death." The conversation seemed to give me hope and courage. After marking a promise to give up the medicine and whiskey that for years had been my only refuge, I was treated. I was told to eat and sleep as I wished. That night my sleep was natural and refreshing. After many years of crossbearing and striving, I still abide in the flesh and know that the Light which cometh down from heaven — harmony — giveth me wisdom and understanding to overcome bodily ills through Immortal Mind:
