A College Student Writes

"Dear Home"

My brothers and I always begin our letters to our parents with the greeting, "Dear Home." It's a family tradition. But I've gone away to school for four years now, and I've learned that "home" is not a place or a certain set of people but a spiritual concept. Christ Jesus said, "The kingdom of God is within you." Luke 17:21; When compassion, patience, and unselfed love are built up in consciousness, you are at home.

A year or so ago I found a good place to live near school. I heard of another girl who was interested in the same place, so we introduced ourselves over the phone and decided to try rooming together.

After a month or two it was apparent to me that what we had was not really a home but a house, and that this girl (let's call her Karen) and I were not really friends but just roommates. The situation was rather cold, and I considered moving out.
