RADIO PROGRAM NO. 223 - You Can't Move Away from Real Identity and Purpose

Questioner: When a family is relocated, the husband is more or less involved in his work and the children have their schooling and play. But the wife may feel that the move has deprived her of friends and relatives and that she has lost her community standing, her identity. What can be done about this?

Speaker: The first thing we have to do is to stop looking back, stop tying in our sense of happiness and accomplishment with what we've done in the past. This is really a self-defeating attitude because it robs us of the opportunities of recognizing the good which is always at hand. If we keep tying our sense of our identity down with what we did in our former community, we're really obstructing the view of the new opportunities which are awaiting us in the new community.

I think one of the most helpful messages that the Bible has for us on this particular subject is found in the Gospel of Luke where Jesus came upon some men whom he wanted to move on, and he asked them to follow him. What Jesus said to them is very significant. He said (Luke 9:62). "No man having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."
