Scientific Prevention of Disease

Only spiritual understanding reaches the root of disease: the beliefs that man is a mortal separated from God and that evil can overpower him. On page 229 of "Miscellaneous Writings," Mrs. Eddy tells us how to prevent disease scientifically, "A calm, Christian state, of mind is a better preventive, of contagion than a drug, or than any other possible sanative method; and the 'perfect Love' that 'casteth out fear' is a sure defense."

Regular, systematic study of the Bible and of the writings of Mrs. Eddy and consecrated practice of the truths learned from them are most salutary. In this study, it is helpful to observe the spiritual, healing qualities expressed by the prophets, Christ Jesus, the disciples, and Mrs. Eddy. We never read that the Master feared disease in any form. When ten lepers approached him with the plea, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us" (Luke 17:13), he immediately responded with mercy sufficient to heal them all.

In proportion as we allow mercy and awareness of God's omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniaction to replace belief in and fear of disease, we shall obey spontaneously Jesus' instructions to his followers (Matt. 10:8), "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give."
