"In God we trust"
[Of Special Interest to Children]
One morning in his class in a Christian Science Sunday School, Erik took a one-dollar bill from his pocket to put in the collection envelope. He held it in front of his eyes and said teasingly, "This is my Sunday School lesson." His teacher, going along with his make-believe, asked, "Is the lesson to be about George Washington?"
Erik looked at the bill more closely, turned it over, and said: "No. On this side is written. 'In God we trust.' " This was exactly what the real Sunday School lesson was to be about: trust and faith in God, Love.
During the previous week Erik and his classmates had read in the Bible the story of the centurion soldier who had great faith and trust in Jesus' power to heal. Trust is a word that can be used with the same meaning as faith, much as Love is used as a synonym for God. They learned that the centurion knew Jesus did not have to see the centurion's sick servant in order to heal him; all he had to do was to "say in a word" (Luke 7:7), and the servant would be healed.
