We are told in the Bible(Ps. 107: 2),...

We are told in the Bible (Ps. 107:2), "Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy." I am convinced that the only absolute freedom from any false appetite is found, not through deprivation and fear, or through material substitutes, even those regarded as harmless, but solely through our gaining a knowledge of Truth.

We also read (Ps. 107:20), "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions." Certainly in my experience it was a gift of God that I was led to Christian Science and was immediately healed of the cigarette habit, of the desire for alcoholic beverages, and of the continued and excessive use of so-called tranquilizers and of soporific drugs. What is more, I was healed in spite of the fact that I did not consciously wish to give up any of these addictions.

When I started to use cigarettes many years ago, it was only on social occasions, and I prided myself that I could stop at any time and was in complete control. Later, as difficulties and pressures seemed to assert themselves in my life, I turned more and more to this habit for satisfaction and seemingly harmless pleasure. My work led me to situations and offices where smoking was permitted and was indulged in constantly by most of the personnel.
