Church Dedications

The Star Courier

Kewanee, Illinois (First Church).

First Church of Christ, Scientist, Kewanee, will dedicate its new edifice at South Main and Lyle Streets, Sunday, May 10, with services at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Christian Science churches are never dedicated until they are free of debt.

The new Christian Science edifice, designed by a Chicago architect, ... is unique among buildings and peculiarly well fitted for the building site. . . . Construction on the new building was started in June, 1962, and the first services were held in the building the Sunday before Christmas, 1962.

The first interest in Christian Science of record in this community was in 1898. At that time [a woman] in Burns Township experienced a healing [with the help of a] practitioner in Chicago. As a result considerable interest was aroused, and in 1900 services were held and a Christian Science Society began to take form. . . . Meetings were held in various homes. In 1902 the group organized as a church [and received recognition by] The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. . . .

On March 25, 1907, the church purchased property at 302 South Main Street, site of the present church. The building was remodeled into a church and was dedicated, free from debt on Feb. 20, 1921.

In 1903 the first Christian Science lecture was given in Kewanee. Since that time the church, in accordance with the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy, has sponsored each year a free lecture on Christian Science by an authorized lecturer.—The Star Courier (May 2, 1964).
