While I was still a child, our family moved to a small farming community, which was so far away from a Christian Science church that we were unable to attend. But one summer our parents left us children in the care of my grandmother, who was a Christian Scientist. Each day she would read aloud the Lesson-Sermon, outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly, and I listened. It was then that I gained a firm conviction that Christian Science heals.

Several years later, when I had graduated from high school, our family moved back to the city, and I immediately enrolled in the Christian Science Sunday School, where I gained a new and beautiful understanding of God and of His love for His children.

One evening we were nearing the city on a busy highway when our car went out of control. It went off the roadway and appeared to be headed for a cement culvert and a deep ditch. Mother, who was driving, tried to stop the car and get it back on the pavement. Instead of stopping, the car whirled around into the lane of oncoming traffic and rolled over into the ditch on the other side of the road.
