Christian Science was presented to us by a dear friend in whose house we were living for a year just prior to the Second World War. For this introduction to the truth, my wife has never ceased to be thankful, nor have I. That in over twenty years I have experienced few physical conditions requiring healing is of itself a testimony to the protecting power of divine Love. And when I review those years, which covered the final one third of my active service in the Royal Navy, I am gratefully aware that in addition to being saved from physical claims, I have been guided and protected each step of the way.

During World War II, as captain of a cruiser, I gained release from a personal sense of responsibility for a valuable ship and for the lives of some eight hundred officers and men when I read words to this effect in a copy of a lecture on Christian Science: man's business is God-governed, God-controlled, God-directed, and God-protected. I saw that all I needed to do was to realize the omnipotence and omnipresence of God, divine Mind, and this would enable me to shift the government to His shoulders, as the lecturer recommended, and so be relieved of my self-assumed responsibilities.

Among a number of physical healings that I have experienced was one of an aggressive skin disease on my face and neck. With the help of a Christian Science practitioner, I worked to gain a clearer realization of myself as a child of God, spiritual, perfect, untouched by any lie of material belief. The condition was healed in about two weeks.
