CHRISTIAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

A problem under wide discussion today is the danger that technology will lead mankind instead of serving them. To many it appears that technology has advanced so fast that moral and spiritual character has not been able to keep up with its pace. The consequence is that humanity is having to adjust itself to material inventions when the need is to adjust those inventions to meet the needs of humanity. The concern of thoughtful people is that modern science has produced machines that may someday outwit humanity and destroy it.

Christian Science shows the fallacy of such argument; according to this vastly important discovery, matter is a subjective state of the carnal, or mortal, mind, and this so-called mind controls whatever it produces. In other words, mortal mind governs the externalized phenomena of its own making. Mary Baker Eddy has this to say on the subject: "Mortal mind perpetuates its own thought. It constructs a machine, manages it, and then calls it material. A mill at work or the action of a water-wheel is but a derivative from, and continuation of, the primitive mortal mind" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 399).

The understanding of these statements brings one to the conclusion that the vital advance that men need to strive for is to be found in the area of spiritualization of thought. Mortal mind must be brought under the control of divine Mind, or God, if error's derivatives are to be robbed of their menace. Mankind must be taught to obey the Golden Rule given by Jesus (Luke 6:31), "As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise." Then there will be no danger involved in the recently acquired knowledge of matter's composition.
