THE FREEDOM THAT CHRIST GIVES

The first amendment to the Constitution of the United States guarantees among other things freedom of religion, speech, and press to the inhabitants of that country. It was among these liberties that Christian Science, which calls for a new concept of universal freedom, was discovered by Mary Baker Eddy, a spiritually minded woman.

In her great work Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 227): "Christian Science raises the standard of liberty and cries: 'Follow me! Escape from the bondage of sickness, sin, and death!' Jesus marked out the way. Citizens of the world, accept the 'glorious liberty of the children of God,' and be free! This is your divine right."

The mission of Christ Jesus was to show mankind the way to liberty, to victory over evil. Though living in an era of religious domination by pharisaical law and of political oppression by Roman rule, he did not advocate the marshaling of force to overthrow the government of Rome or the priesthood, nor did he lead an exodus to another land. But he showed how unjust law and imposition could be overcome through a Christly sense of spiritual dominion.
