"THE CHILDREN OF GOD HAVE BUT ONE MIND"
Christian Science provides the basis for the solution of all human problems. On page 469 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy states: "Mind is God. The exterminator of error is the great truth that God, good, is the only Mind, and that the supposititious opposite of infinite Mind—called devil or evil—is not Mind, is not Truth, but error, without intelligence or reality."
Since the divine Mind is the only Mind, the false claim that there are other minds is pure delusion. The infinite, all-harmonious Mind, God, is constantly revealing Himself to His creation. Therefore the individual can know all that is necessary for him to know, for in reality he is the idea of God, divine Mind. Each idea of God reflects every quality necessary for perfect expression of intelligence.
Individual man is at one with this Mind, just as the individual ray of light is at one with the sun. He is no more dependent upon his brother man for any required knowledge or intelligence than a ray of light is dependent upon the rays around it for elements or qualities of light. Each one is in reality the blessed child of God, good, expressing Him perfectly, completely independent of other ideas for life or intelligence.
The patriarchs, Moses, and the prophets proved in some degree their understanding that there is but one Mind or intelligence governing man. When Christ Jesus declared (John 10:30), "I and my Father are one," was he not implying that he knew of no other than the one perfect Mind, God? Was he not claiming this Mind to be his Mind?
Mrs. Eddy depended wholly upon the one Mind for the complete and final revelation of Truth to this age—Christian Science. All sincere and consecrated students of Christian Science turn instinctively to the one Mind for the solution of all their problems.
A student of Christian Science once demonstrated that infinite Mind, God, is sufficient to supply all needed intelligence to His children. When the task of moving a grapefruit tree from the yard to the orchard was undertaken, it seemed right and intelligent to have the tree taken up with the soil around the roots. After the tree was balled and burlapped, the weight was so great that the four workmen could not lift the tree out of the deep hole. Although various experts offered suggestions, none of these recommendations seemed practical.
At this point the Scientist turned her thought to the one Mind for guidance. One of the many truths which unfolded in her consciousness was from Science and Health (p. 470), "The children of God have but one Mind." She knew that the divine Mind holds within itself all power, all ability, and all perfect results and that it would reveal the solution to this problem.
In a very short time, she heard the men laughing. They were all working rapidly and with great joy, leaning the tree first in one direction and then in another, filling in the hole under the ball. Soon the tree was resting on the ground level. It was then rolled onto a flat trailer and taken to the place prepared for it in the orchard.
In a way that the workmen could understand, the one Mind had revealed the intelligence needed to work out the solution to the problem. This Mind needs no interpreter but speaks directly to each individual consciousness.
Our Leader gives us this inspiring teaching (ibid., p. 467): "It should be thoroughly understood that all men have one Mind, one God and Father, one Life, Truth, and Love." And she continues, "Having no other gods, turning to no other but the one perfect Mind to guide him, man is the likeness of God, pure and eternal, having that Mind which was also in Christ."
