FACT VERSUS FICTION
The promised Comforter, Christian Science, is gradually awakening the slumbering world, dreaming of life in matter, to the glorious reality that Life is God, Spirit. This awakening enables mankind to distinguish between the fact of spiritual creation and the fiction of a material creation.
Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 492): "For right reasoning there should be but one fact before the thought, namely, spiritual existence. In reality there is no other existence, since Life cannot be united to its unlikeness, mortality."
The belief that man is made from the dust of the ground and that life and intelligence are in matter is being exposed through the light of God, divine Mind, and its falsity is being revealed to the hungering heart searching after righteousness. How grateful we can all be to know the true facts of creation and not to be made to believe mortal mind and its fictitious concept of a material creation! Spirit, God, is infinite, filling all space; therefore He is the only presence, the only power, the only creator, governing and guiding all His creation.
Most of us have heard the expression, "Truth is stranger than fiction." Does not a large portion of humanity still think it strange to believe in the unreality of all evil? Many are not ready to accept the truth that good alone is real; but the Scriptures tell us (Gen. 1:31), "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." How many are willing to accept the allness of God, good, as fact and to denounce as fiction evil's claim to power and reality?
In Science and Health we read (pp. 502, 503): "There is but one creator and one creation. This creation consists of the unfolding of spiritual ideas and their identities, which are embraced in the infinite Mind and forever reflected. These ideas range from the infinitesimal to infinity, and the highest ideas are the sons and daughters of God."
All the attributes of God are man's eternal inheritance as reflection or divine image and likeness. The Christ-consciousness, the manifestation of divine Love, reveals God's spiritual, perfect creation here and now. As students of Christian Science begin to understand the fact of the perfection of God and man and humbly pray to be imbued with the divine Mind, they see its harmonious and infinite expression shining through all their affairs—in business, home, church, and social activities.
The writer recalls with deep gratitude her first healing in Christian Science. She was suffering from growths around the eyes, and a doctor had recommended that she see a specialist. She turned instead to Science; but she did not know that a person could be healed simply by reading the Christian Science textbook.
She purchased her own copy from a Christian Science Reading Room, arrived home, and sat down to read it. When she opened the book to the first page of the Preface, she knew she had found the truth that Christ Jesus said would make men free. She read the book from cover to cover and felt very much uplifted as she recognized the distinction between fact and fiction.
The inspired state of thought stayed with her for several weeks. Everything she looked at—trees, flowers, sky, and clouds—all seemed more beautiful than ever before. She beheld the fact that there is one creative governing Principle of the universe, God, and she awakened in a measure to the loveliness of divine Love.
Her healing was accomplished by the reading of the textbook alone. The Bible, which she had read daily for years, was suddenly illumined in its spiritual import. Her search for divine Truth was fulfilled, and the key which opened the door to the kingdom of heaven on earth was Christian Science, the Science of Christ.
Prior to becoming a student of this religion, the writer had a desire for spiritual understanding. She longed fully to comprehend Christ Jesus' words and to imitate his works, for he had said to all his followers (John 14:12), "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." As she read the textbook, she realized that the Science of being is unfolded through divine inspiration and revelation and that mortal mind is incapable of understanding the spiritual facts of being.
She learned that matter, the outgrowth of mortal mind with its fictions of sin, disease, and death, is proved unreal by one's understanding the spiritual fact that Life is God, immortal, indestructible, eternal. Man, God's reflection, is forever complete, untouched and unfettered by the beliefs of mortality, and inseparable from the radiance of Soul, God. The real man knows only health, peace, holiness, joy, harmony, abundance, and an abiding conviction of the dear Father's all-embracing Love.
The mortal is not man; a mortal knows only a limited, temporal, oftentimes discordant, sick, or sinning fragment of an imperfect, material creation. Christ, Truth, the impersonal Saviour, destroys the mortal beliefs of mankind with the immortal truth that only the good is real and eternal.
Spiritual awakening is essential in our pathway from sense to Soul. The revelation of God as All-in-all completely dispels the mist of fiction and reveals the true fact of God and His creation, man and the universe. Our Leader brings out this thought very clearly in Science and Health, where she writes (p. 264): "As mortals gain more correct views of God and man, multitudinous objects of creation, which before were invisible, will become visible. When we realize that Life is Spirit, never in nor of matter, this understanding will expand into self-completeness, finding all in God, good, and needing no other consciousness."
