Christian Science was introduced...

Christian Science was introduced to me by a friend at a time when I was greatly in need of help. Over a period of ten years I had suffered from a painful condition of the bladder, but had found no relief in spite of operations and regular treatments from several kind doctors.

Because of my husband's work, we were transferred too far away for me to visit the doctor, as had been my regular practice for four years. We were only supposed to be gone for three months; so we kept our apartment and took just the essentials with us. Something, however, made me take with me the copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which the friend had given to me, although I really was not interested in Christian Science at that time.

My husband was away for twelve hours of the day. Since I did not know anyone in the town, I indulged in self-pity, until one morning I felt the urge to read this textbook. After that I made it a habit to read from it every morning after my husband had left.

The specialist in Los Angeles had given me a letter of introduction to a doctor in the town where I was then living, but I gave up the idea of going to him after I had started to read Science and Health, and I threw all my pills and medicine away. However, the problem was not overcome at that time. I realize now that my way of thinking had to be changed first.

There was a Christian Science church in the town, but I felt that because I did not know enough of Christian Science, I had no right to go there or to the Reading Room. I learned later how very wrong I was.

My husband was again transferred to another town; and there I finally visited a Reading Room, where the attendant received me with much love and understanding and invited me to attend services in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, which I did. Also I sought the help of a practitioner, but I was not ready to relinquish my way of thinking until we were transferred again.

In our new location, I found a woman who was able to open my eyes to the nothingness of sickness and to the allness of God, good. When I visited with her, we did not mention the trouble. We just talked of God and of His great love for man. We talked of Christ Jesus and of his work among men, and I was told about our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and of her great love for her fellow men, which made her share her wonderful discovery with all of us.

When the healing took place, I cannot say. The trouble simply disappeared, and the healing has been permanent. That was almost fifteen years ago. Since then I have had many healings in Christian Science, either with the help of practitioners or through my own understanding of God as the only cause and creator.

I am grateful to our Leader for giving us "the scientific statement of being," found on page 468 of Science and Health. I can never be grateful enough to the friend who introduced Christian Science to me, to the faithful practitioner who so lovingly led me in the way of this Science, and to the many friends who, by their example, have been an inspiration to me. I am also very grateful to be a member of The Mother Church.—(Mrs.) Else Miller, Los Angeles, California.
