WHAT ARE WE ACCEPTING?

Most business firms take periodic inventories to ascertain what stock they have on hand and to aid in showing what the firms are worth. Christian Scientists might well use the idea of an inventory to find what types of thoughts they have admitted into their consciousness and in this way to learn somewhat of their true worth as sons and daughters of God.

The thoughts we are storing in our consciousness are of great importance in determining our progress in the study of Christian Science. Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, provides a thought provoking statement, followed by a question, along this line. She writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 182): "The demands of God appeal to thought only; but the claims of mortality, and what are termed laws of nature, appertain to matter. Which, then, are we to accept as legitimate and capable of producing the highest human good?"

Have we accepted the false suggestions of mortal mind that man is ailing, critical, and unkind; that a business associate is guilty of sharp practice; or that a neighbor does not measure up to our standard of conduct? In other words, have we accepted lies, "claims of mortality," or have we rejected them quickly and instead accepted the truth, "the demands of God"? The truth is that man is the image and likeness of God, Spirit, reflecting health and holiness; that as the creation of God, divine Truth, he expresses integrity and always measures up to God's standard of perfection.
