Before I found Christian Science...
Before I found Christian Science, I was confused and disheartened. I was always ailing and spent most of my money and time trying to find the cure for my problems through medical means.
At one time my doctor said I had colitis, and I was unable to go to work. One day a woman who stayed at the hotel where I worked came to see me, and before she left she asked me if I would like to read a periodical she had brought for me. It was a copy of the Sentinel. I thanked her for it, and after she left I opened it to find she had marked certain passages for me. I read it and pondered every word. I knew instinctively that this was the truth. I loved it and needed it badly.
During the next few days, I suffered more pain and sleepless nights, but I often picked up the Sentinel and reread various passages. One morning I lay in bed, feeling very weak. The sun was shining, and my thoughts turned to those friends who, I knew, were on the beach sun-bathing and swimming. Suddenly, as if a voice had prompted me, I got out of bed without effort and joined the swimmers. I swam and sun-bathed for three or four hours, ate a hearty lunch, and walked most of the way home, which was some mile.
This was the last of the colitis and was my first healing in Christian Science. Next day I discarded all medicines, and since then this wonderful truth has been my only help in times of need.
I began to attend the Sunday services and the Wednesday testimony meetings in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. I shall always remember the feeling of joy and peace this attendance brought me.
Later I was introduced to a young woman who was a student of Christian Science. I can never express my gratitude for her helpfulness to me, a new student. She showed me how to study the Bible, together with the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and she gave me a copy of the textbook.
Within a few weeks after I began to study these two books, I was healed of smoking and social drinking. I also had healings of burns, scalds, and colds. Supply has been adequately provided, and I have found employment in more harmonious surroundings.
Words are inadequate to express my deep gratitude for Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and for Mrs. Eddy, our Leader, who gave us this wonderful revelation of Truth. I am grateful for the literature, which enables us to understand more and more of this healing power, for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, for the testimony meetings, for the lectures, and for our beautiful hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal.
But I am most grateful for our Lesson-Sermons from the Christian Science Quarterly which give us protection and guidance in all we do. For all that this Science has done for me, I am indeed humbly grateful.—Jack Dunn, Bournemouth, Hampshire, England.
